First Quarter Financial Update

Dear Church Family and Friends,

Grace and peace!

After a hard Winter, I know you are as excited as I am to welcome in the new life of Spring! I love the imagery of new life breaking forth from the ground and turning the dry and grey world into one bursting forth with color. We are thankful that the church as well is experiencing new life this Spring. Our Easter Weekend services welcomed 900 for all of our in-person services. Many of our Sunday school classes and groups have restarted and great plans are in the works for our children and student ministries this Summer. God is at work bringing New Life, and we are excited to be a part of it!

As you know, 2021 started with great challenges for us. The freeze and corresponding flood of our sanctuary building had the potential to be devastating for us. But our church is bigger than a building and we have come together to face this challenge with the help of God. We continue to press on with the work of God even as we continue to face ongoing challenges. Financially, our struggles continue. While we have worked hard to hold our expenses under our budget, the contributions continue to fall short of what we need to sustain the budget long term. As of the end of March, we have only received 77% of what we expected in contributions. Of the 13 weeks in this first quarter, four of them have under $20,000 in operating fund contributions. For perspective, this only happened two other Sundays since 2014. Thankfully, we have been able to sustain our budget throughout by relying on existing funds and holding our expenses to 88% of the budget.

As we continue to see more people return to in-person worship, our prayer is that our contributions will also see an increase. We know Covid has disrupted our lives in a myriad of ways, but we need your help to ensure that our ministries remain strong and vibrant as we resume our full activities. Without additional funds we may be forced to make tough decisions that could impact our ability to do ministry.

As we look toward Summer, we do encourage everyone to consider a regular, ongoing contribution through bank draft giving (ACH). This is an easy and consistent way to support everything that God is doing in and through Friendswood Methodist. Information on how to set this up can be found at friendswoodmethodist.org/giving. You can also give in person, by mail, or by donating assets.

Below are some specific numbers from our 1st quarter. If you have questions or would like to know how you can help further support the church, you can contact me at howard@friendswoodmethodist.org and I will do my best to help you.

May God’s new life spring forth in you that you might reflect His glory to the world!

In Christ,
Howard Huhn
